Un must !
“Originally formed in Paris in 1972 by students studying abroad from Antioch College, OH, improvisational jazz collective The Pyramids traveled across Europe and Africa before recording a trio of self-released albums. Saxophonist and composer Idris Ackamoor is best-known as the founder and leader of the seminal Afrocentric world music and spiritual jazz group. After releasing those three privately pressed LPs the group disbanded in 1977 and for nearly 20 years, Ackamoor threw himself into his work with his San Francisco-based arts organization Cultural Odyssey, recording only occasionally. After a reunion concert in 2007, the band reformed in 2010 following a wave of interest in their music.
In 2012, Ackamoor was awarded a Lifetime Achievement award by the BBC’s Gilles Peterson, and released The Beginning of the Second Earth with Cultural Odyssey. In 2016, Ackamoor reconvened the Pyramids for the widely acclaimed We All Be Africans album on Strut.
Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids are back with their first major new studio album in over 3 years, an epic, sprawling new work exploring the future, the past and the urgent reality of the present, ‘Afro Futuristic Dreams’.”
